Our Music Program

Mile End Campus Year 7 – 12+

The Music Department at Temple Christian College offers its students a diverse range of opportunities, both within a classroom and extra-curricular context to express their interest and participation in music.

Classroom Music

In Years 7 and 8 students experience a semester of Music, in which they are exposed to many practical opportunities to help hone their skills as budding musicians. These opportunities help students to build confidence, learn to work well with others and develop discipline as their musical potential is realised.

Year 7’s are given the opportunity to participate in our Brass, Strings or Wind program which enables them to learn these instruments with a specialist teacher, while our Year 8’s learn the basics of playing acoustic guitar and the drum kit, leading towards class ensemble opportunities.

Students are able to develop their music technology skills with the variety of programs such as Garageband, Sibelius and Logic Pro, all available to use within our Mac Lab.

Music is an elective subject from Years 9 -12 and students continue to study music within a historical, practical and theoretical context. Students are able to undergo more specialised Music courses as they complete SACE Stage 1 and 2 Music, depending on the strengths of the student. SACE music subjects offered include Music Studies, Music Explorations, as well as Solo and Ensemble Performance.

Students are involved in many performance opportunities as a part of their classroom courses, including the Year 7 and 8 Concerts, Assemblies, Open Evening and our Music Showcase.

Extra-Curricular Music

Temple Christian College offers a large range of ensembles for students to be involved in. Our ensembles perform at a large number of events, including exciting opportunities such as Generations in Jazz and the Balaklava Eisteddfod. All of the students involved in the extra-curricular ensembles are generally expected to be having regular lessons on their instrument to draw further benefits from these opportunities.

Students are invited to be involved in the following ensembles:

Concert Band
Musical Orchestra (biennially occurring alongside the school Musical)
Stage Band 1(auditioned)
Stage Band 2
Assembly Worship Teams

Generation in Jazz

Every year, Temple Christian College participates in the Annual Generations in Jazz event, held during May at Mount Gambier, South Australia. 2023 will be the first year that this event is held live onsite, so we look forward to having our ensembles compete in a number of divisions, as well as enjoy the live performances and workshops available to them.
